Odds to Become New Volunteers Football Coach
The University of Tennessee has fired head football coach Jeremy Pruitt after an internal investigation determined that members of his staff committed recruiting violations.
Tennessee is hoping that by taking quick action, it will keep the NCAA from issuing further punishment.
The university will be hiring a search firm to help in the hiring process, and the new athletic director at UT will also be involved in the process. Even though Tennessee has had a few tough seasons, this is still considered one of the most sought after jobs in the country.
A number of big names are expected to apply for the job, and the school will also be reaching out to some coaches that are currently under contract at other institutions. It’s unclear who might be on the radar for the Volunteers football program, but sportsbooks have already released odds.
Here is a brief look at some of the top coaching candidates, along with a brief look at some of the potential new hires and odds from DraftKings TN Sportsbook.
Billy Napier +300
Jamey Chadwell +350
Bill Clark +400
Luke Fickell +450
Doug Marrone +500
Hugh Freeze +550
Jim Caldwell +600
Tom Herman +700
Lane Kiffin +800
Gus Malzahn +1000
Kevin Steele +1200
Billy Napier is currently listed as the favorite to take over the job at the University of Tennessee and he has been a strong candidate to take over a big-time job prior to next season. Napier is currently the head coach at Louisiana, and he brings an uptempo style of offense with him.
Jamey Chadwell is another coach that is currently at a small school, but has built up a terrific resume. Chadwell led the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to an 11-1 record this season, including a big win over BYU.
Luke Fickell is the current head coach at the University of Cincinnati, but he has present some time at Ohio State. Fickell is another coach that has been rumored to take over at other places throughout the country, and he could be a solid choice at Tennessee.
Doug Marrone was recently fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Tennessee could be competitng with the Alabama Crimson Tide for his services. Alabama is hoping to bring Marrone in as an offensive line coach, but a head coaching position at Tennessee is a much better job.
Huge Freeze and Guz Malzahn could come to Tennessee after being fired from SEC coaching jobs in the past, and they will know their way around the conference. Freeze had a successful season with Liberty this past year, and he could be looking to get back into the best football conference in the country.
Tom Herman is also available after recently being fired from the University of Texas. Herman is one of the biggest names on this list, and would instantly bring some credibility after all that Tennessee is dealing with now.
Kevin Steele is expected to take over as the interim head coach, but it’s not likely that he will be considered as a top candidate for Tennessee.
